This man changed my life. I first “met” Zig Ziglar at the public library. I was 19 years old and had my first job in sales. That was a joke because I did not belong in sales. I was soooooo shy I could not hold a conversation with anyone other than family or very close friends. I kept losing deals because I would put myself in the other person’s shoes and come up with every reason possible why they didn’t want to buy. I had thought of all the objections before I talked to them and had frightened myself so bad that I couldn’t get past hello!
I was and still am a “book worm.” I knew that the answer to anything could be
found at the public library. I dug through stacks of books in search of knowledge to help me break free from being shy so I could succeed at sales. I can’t remember which book I read first; I think it was “See You at the Top” and then “Secrets of Closing the Sale“.
I read and re-read both books; learned the closes verbatim. Then somehow I got a hold of a “Salesman’s Opportunity Magazine” and discovered that I could order recordings of Zig on cassette tapes (remember those?) from a little company called Nightingale-Conant.
The sound of his voice became that of an endearing mentor. He caused me to believe that with a little practice I could be exceptional.
I listened to the recordings over and over until I began to succeed in sales. I have been in sales by choice my entire life because of this man. I built and sold a million dollar business, making the ultimate sale when I “sold” my husband on the idea of quitting his job with a Gannett Newspaper to join me in building the business.
For the last seven years I have been a single parent raising three children – sales have kept us going. I believe I have grown as a person and am becoming the woman of influence that I desire to be by improving the lives of others with the products and services I sell.
May God allow me to expand my area of influence to touch lives the same way that Zig Ziglar touched mine and many, many others.
My friend and mentor, Zig Ziglar, thank you. I will see You at the Top. I am heaven-bound.
