Categories are one of the strongest signals in your Google Business Profile. They tell Google what your business is — and that decides which searches you are even eligible to appear in. If your categories are wrong or incomplete, no amount of photos or reviews will fix it.
Google lets you choose one primary category and several secondary ones. The primary category carries the most weight. It should describe your core money-making service as specifically as possible. “Roof cleaning service” will outperform a vague choice like “Cleaning service” for roof cleaning searches.
Secondary categories cover the other services you genuinely offer. A med spa might add categories for skin care clinic and waxing salon. Each relevant category expands the searches you can appear in — but only add categories that truly match what you do.
As many as genuinely apply — often three to six. Every category should describe a real service you want more customers for.
Yes, at any time in your profile settings. Occasionally Google asks for re-verification after significant changes.
Changing to more accurate categories usually helps. Expect some movement while Google re-evaluates where your business fits.
