Embrace Forward Momentum: The Key to Sustained Growth in Business

“Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.” —Andy Rooney, radio and television journalist

I used to cave under challenges in my business. It seemed that I would go in circles trying to avoid hitting “the brick wall” when trying to accomplish something.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

It seemed as if every time I was prepared to grow my business I would encounter an obstacle that seemed as if it were insurmountable, a problem unsolvable.

In these moments I would assign blame to myself as if I wasn’t good enough or smart enough. Or, I would place the blame outside myself — others were letting me down or holding me back – or, “they” were just better than me.

Then, I had an epiphany. In a moment of desperation I wondered if the problem I was facing was solvable…by me.

I started to face obstacles and problems with curiosity, looking for solutions. I began to be willing to experience trial and error. Yes, I became willing to try and get it wrong so that I could learn something that would bring me closer to a solution.

This mindset created forward motion. I started to bust through obstacles and come up with solutions for myself and the clients that I serve.

Now when I lay in bed at night, kept awake by thoughts of the challenges that I am currently facing, I cheer myself on with a reminder of what a great problem solver I am.

It is impressive how my brain begins to release possibilities. Not every “possible thought” is the answer but each thought moves me closer to the answer to steers me away from the wrong direction.

I am now committed to daily forward momentum in the growth of my business. I seek out the wisdom that helps me cultivate this mindset.

I am a big believer in leveraging the inspiration of quotes from visionary leaders to serve as guiding beacons.

“No company can afford not to move forward. It may be at the top of the heap today but at the bottom of the heap tomorrow, if it doesn’t.”

—James Cash Penney, Founder of JCPenney

In the dynamic landscape of digital marketing, staying stagnant is akin to inviting obsolescence. James Cash Penney’s words ring true: “No company can afford not to move forward.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of survival and success in the fast-paced realm of online marketing. Even if you believe you’re on the right track, complacency is the silent assassin that can swiftly derail your progress.

“Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

—Will Rogers, actor and humorist

Will Rogers humorously quips, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” This statement resonates profoundly with businesses striving for relevance amidst fierce competition. The digital arena is unforgiving to those who rest on their laurels. The digital landscape evolves constantly, demanding adaptation and innovation at every turn.

“If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. And, if you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

—Martin Luther King Jr., minister, activist, civil rights leader

Martin Luther King Jr. immortalized the importance of perseverance, asserting, “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. And, if you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” In the context of digital marketing, this wisdom translates into a relentless pursuit of improvement. Whether you’re a budding startup or an established enterprise, progress hinges on your ability to embrace change and push forward despite obstacles.

“Growth, in some curious way, I suspect, depends on being always in motion just a little bit, one way or another.”

—Norman Mailer, writer, activist, and actor

Norman Mailer beautifully captures the essence of growth, suggesting that it “depends on being always in motion just a little bit, one way or another.” The digital landscape rewards those who are proactive, agile, and willing to explore uncharted territories. It’s not about making quantum leaps overnight but rather about consistently moving the needle forward, however small the increments may be.

“The most dangerous poison is the feeling of achievement. The antidote is to every evening think what can be done better tomorrow.”

—Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA

Ingvar Kamprad’s insight serves as a cautionary reminder against the peril of complacency. He warns, “The most dangerous poison is the feeling of achievement. The antidote is to every evening think what can be done better tomorrow.” This philosophy embodies the ethos of continuous improvement, a cornerstone of successful digital marketing strategies. Celebrate your victories but never lose sight of the need for evolution and refinement.

I am challenged to embrace forward momentum, for it is the catalyst that propels businesses from mediocrity to greatness. As you embark on the journey to grow your business, remember the wisdom of those who came before you and strive to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
